Early Action FAQs

Early Action FAQs The first round of application deadlines are upon you, which means ALL THE EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS are upon us. So many. If you’ve been trying to contact the Admissions office regarding your application, and you still haven’t heard from us, don’t worry! We got your message but are chipping away at them more slowly than usual because the volume has been so high. (Last week, we were getting over a hundred emails a day…) While you are patiently waiting, please check out the FAQs below in case I can get you back to zen calm state sooner :) ***AN IMPORTANT NOTE***: A lot of people seem to be panicking about getting all the required materials in for the Early Action (EA) deadline. We know that there’s been a ton of craziness with natural disasters this year (which impacted the testing), not all of you have been able to set up your interview, etc. If you can’t make the Early Action deadline, it is okay to apply Regular Action (RA). Seriously. You don’t get “bonus points” or extra consideration by applying early. Some schools use an early application as demonstration of interest, but we don’t. You should submit an application for Early Action purely for your own peace of mindâ€"if you happen to have everything ready right now, great! You can potentially get your admission decision sooner :) But if not, don’t worry about “strategizing” around early and regular action cycles. It doesn’t matter to us. AHHHHH MY INTERVIEWER HASN’T RESPONDED TO ME Ahhh okay okay okay okay The deadline to CONTACT your interviewer was last Friday*. This is NOT the deadline to have your interview. Interviewers still have time to respond to you and do the interview. Gently poke your interviewer if it’s been a couple days since you reached out to them, and maybe remind them that you’re applying Early Action. If they don’t respond after 2 or 3 emails, contact [emailprotected] and we may try to reassign you to a different interviewer (be patient as it may take us a few days to do this). That interviewer may be willing to do the interview soon. If that interviewer doesn’t respond, or we can’t reassign a new interviewer to you for some reason, we will waive your interview and it won’t hurt your admissions chances. We make notes when stuff like that happens so the Admissions committee knows. *Its a slightly different situation for people applying through QuestBridge, since you were just notified if you were finalists. Latashas done a great QA for QB applicants in general over here. AHHHH I DID MY INTERVIEW BUT IT HASN’T BEEN CHECKED OFF IN MyMIT TRACKER We’re still processing all the documents, give it some time (roughly a week). UNLESS you 1) did your interview more than two weeks ago AND 2) you submitted Part 1 of the application. In that case, go to your MyMIT account - “Online Application Tracking” - scroll down to interview and fill out the “Conducted Interview Form”. The form notifies us that you conducted the interview and that we should just keep an eye out for the report from the interviewer. You WON’T be penalized if the report doesn’t get to us by Nov. 1. But remember, only do this if both stipulations outlined above have been met. AHHHH MY ___ DOCUMENT ISN’T SHOWING UP IN MyMIT TRACKER It can take about 7 business days for us to process all the documents, so wait at least a week before contacting us. Were accepting documents from schools, testing agencies, and letter writers through the month of November so don’t worry if some of that doesn’t make it in by the Nov. 1 deadline (do make sure that YOUR Part 1 and 2 are in, though!). Just make sure you have hit submit on everything from your end by Nov. 1 for Early Action. That’s the important deadline. If we take an extra week to process that materials, that’s on us and it won’t hurt your application. If you’ve submitted documents through ApplyWithUs or Naviance, those don’t automatically go into your file so it takes about 7 working days for them to appear in your MyMIT tracker. AHHHH I CAN’T CHECK THE STATUS OF MY APPLICATION You won’t be able to use the MyMIT application tracker until you submit Part 1 of the application. So make sure that’s submitted before you start emailing us about your file :P tl;dr we are doing our very best to get to your emails and questions and to quickly process documents. Just give us a few days to respond to questions and about a week to process materials. Make sure you read through the pages on our pages for freshman applicants. And do reach out to us if anything wonky has happened or if you have specific concerns! We really are here to help and make this as minimally-stressful as possible, we’re just humans and can only type and talk so fast. Also, rest assured that despite the volume of sheer stuff that’s been coming in, we consider everything you send with the utmost care and consideration. That’s part of why we’re slow. There are real humans behind all of this who care that you’ve put so much thought and effort into your application, so we want to make sure we’re processing everything carefully and respecting all your hard work. :) Post Tagged #admissions interview #admissions interview #Early Action #FAQs #MyMIT #Regular Action

Lessons I Learned Through Personal Experience Essay

The following stories show the lessons I learned through personal experiences. Growing up in Berkeley Springs and moving to Cumberland pushes me to adapt to change, meet new people and find my personality. As I go through each grade a new lesson is learned, some more important than others. Every experience shown in the following vignettes shapes how I will succeed in the future Elementary School Trust and feelings took up the majority of my elementary. These were the years I learned that you should trust people, but you still have to watch your back. Some people’s decisions will completely shock you, and some of your decisions may completely shock others. Treasuring every moment with people that mean the most to you is†¦show more content†¦Don’t take on a bet unless you feel like the outcome is really worth it. Second Grade My uncle John was like my older brother when I was little. He was always there to play video games with and has a lot of fun. One day I heard my mom on the phone talking about John having to go to the hospital. â€Å"What’s wrong with him† I repetitively whispered to my mom while she was still talking. My mom gets off the phone and tells me my uncle was bit by a tick and not doing well at all. My family and I went to the hospital and it felt like we waited forever to see my uncle. We lied about my age so the people working there would let me see him. I heard doctors talking about how his heart rate was really low and that his chances were not good. I ran over to the side of his bed giving him a huge hug as best as I could. It was then that I made my decision, I would never go into the woods again. Third Grade This is the year my life as I knew it would change. My mom told me we were moving to Cumberland to live with the man she was going to marry. Advanced Flight Deck Technology for Safety Free Essays

Over the years and through technology and the requirements of safety and comfort new deck flight plans have been devised and implemented. With this forward movement of a more integrated flight deck and commercial aircraft overall, this has led to a wider safety margin, a more economical cost of operations which in turn will help lower the consumers price of flights as well as their comfort and safety margin. The new flight deck of the Boeing 787 has taken into consideration many factors of the human element of not only pilots but passengers as well. We will write a custom essay sample on Advanced Flight Deck Technology for Safety or any similar topic only for you Order Now Boeing has spent many years with engineers as well as the astronauts from Nasa to incorporate and implement a flight deck design that in its overall abilities will prove to be a much safer, a more reliable â€Å"tool† of flight ensuring the safety of all on board their commercial plane as well as ensuring specific ergonomic factors of the pilots, all of which in turn will help for a smoother flight and mitigate many more chances of potential accidents. At the same time there have also been the ongoing efforts to revolutionize the passenger decks for comfort, security and convenience. Before the new design process for the Boeing 787 flight deck was actually implemented there were several factors that were considered. The old style flight deck instrument control panel itself had many more individual panels to read and watch, their design somewhat sporadic in comparison with what a pilot needed to view and when. There was a limited streamline for functionality. Furthermore, certain controls were either in the way or out of the way making for increased eye, hand and body movement to make a simple adjustment. Pilot seats were more stationary, lacking the ability to swivel completely or to recline or even for basic lumbar support. The windshield has a lesser visibility radius than the new flight deck. The human factors of designing the new flight deck took into account certain specifics of ergonomics. This was to try and reduce strain on the lower back due to prolonged sitting, strain and wear on hands by operating simple hand controls and functions and less strain on eye movements or basic visibility. These were the more important factors to help alleviate potential health issues that pilots, overtime, would experience, furthermore the flight deck design has less capability of causing carpal tunnel, eye strain, dealing with glare functions and in general less tiredness of the pilots which the end result would mean a safer flight for all involved and a more rejuvenated pilot after the flight. The new design of this deck for the pilots has incorporated many changes. The controls, instead of all being joystick like are now more operational by the touch of a button which reduces carpal tunnel stress by having less rigidity that is common with all joystick controls. The windshield is now more anti glare and has the added function, in conjunction with the new panel, to allow for low visibility takeoffs and landings. The instrument panel has a much greater streamlined effect and fewer panels to view as well. The readouts are bigger and more detailed so that a pilot may not have to look as long or as hard to determine what they must do, this allows for quicker reaction time under all circumstances. The data entry devices have been moved more out of the way to an off side positioning instead of an underneath or above positioning of the readout panels. This helps eliminate accidental data entry as the main point of any flight panel is centered. This has helped in wing control specifically. The rudder and indicators of the rudders, landing gear, fuel and other various indicators necessary has been moved to the main control panel that now rests in front of the pilot versus the traditional placement of above the pilot. This way the pilot does not have to continually look up to check the indicators of a safe flight thus reducing body strain. One big change in the flight deck panel is the room for technological growth. Our technology is ever changing and the room left for this growth will help to ensure a placement of future technology without having to completely redesign the entire panel time and again. This has just become a more economy efficient plane. One thing that most people don’t realize, especially on longer flights is the need for paper to make notes on when flight plans need to be changed, when there needs to be an additional and yet unexpected change and this new implementation also helps with keeping a logbook more accurate and that is the built in, electronic scratch pad. Pilots can make notes about shifting winds, potential or unexpected weather pattern changes, a new noise that might be heard and for the mechanic or engineer to check out upon landing, whatever the case may be. Considering the scratch pad is built in and computer controlled, should there be a failing or an accident, this along with the traditional black box may help solve many questions as to why much quicker. Airport layouts are all different and each pilot must know the layout of the airport to help alleviate getting in the way or creating a ground accident before and after take off. The way this was dealt with is by programming an airport map function, for each airport, into a menu driven control panel. Pilots are able to look at these maps and determine their point of entry or take off in conjunction with the tower’s instructions. It gives them a much needed and yet basic heads up for comfortability in knowledge. This same programming also will record flight plans which in turn will tell you if you are off course and by how far. Additionally it will also give options to view other flight routes should an emergency or other type of landing need to be instituted. Lastly, in correlation is the gps like ability of marking waypoints. Many would not think there could be waypoints when in the air but the lay of the land, different mountain ranges and bodies of water can be considered waypoints. With these new implementations this allows both pilots, at the same time, to have and maintain the same operational ability instead of one pilot having control aspects over a part of the plane, and the co-pilot sequestered into a different set of controls altogether. This becomes more of the teamwork atmosphere that is need for the lives of those on board. There is a design for error tolerance where there wasn’t before, meaning that should a pilot make an error in the flight path, the programming will take over to correct the situation. This error tolerance is only 1% but if you keep off course by that 1% then you will be far from your intended destination. This allows for a human to machine interface and more safety factors. Instead of wondering what the plane is doing, a pilot will know what the plane is doing. There is obviously suggested training, especially with those who do not have flight management experience. Boeing has done what they can at this time to insure that their safety guidelines are not only met for human risk but that these guidelines are above what is required and to the scope of guideline by other facilities and engineering specs. Now with this new integrated, streamlined flight deck, the passenger cabins have also been upgraded to include better air quality, more natural lighting via larger windows, larger overhead bins which make it easier to get in and out of when retrieving personal items. The seats are wider as is the aisles and for those who are taller, there is a substantial more amount of headroom. There are current plans for future ATM’s to be located on this plane. So with all of this in mind, taking in normal human strengths and weaknesses which vary from person to person, this new flight deck allows for more safety, especially with fewer parts being used, less failing and quicker ability for response time, and potentially less fuel which in turn creates a savings that can be put off, in part, to the consumer when they purchase a ticket to fly on the commercial Boeing 787. The psychological effects not only on the pilots but on the customers, when they obtain this knowledge helps ease tension, behooves a less stressful environment for pilots and when all these functions are in place and all feel secure a flight goes much smoother. Small aircraft pilots would benefit greatly from this design as the majority of small plains are still archaic in their designs. Even though this is true, the safety factor needs are still the same. In some respects, with the technology into the Boeing flight deck, this actually makes the larger plane much safer than the smaller planes of personal pleasure. (CL Tapken 2008). This is usually used to gauge the maximum possible loss that a manager can gain from the effect of a decision. Hence, Minimax allows the management to consider the effect of a decision on the organization. Maximax Maximax is an alternative that maximizes maximum possible gain. The management usually considers the decision that will enable them receive the highest potential gain out of the implication of the decision on the organization. Payoff Payoff is one short event, a result of pairing a decision alternative with an outcome. The objective of the payoff is to allow the management determine the advantages in terms of gain that they will receive from a certain event based on their decision. Expected Value Expected Value is the outcome of multiplying the probability of an uncontrolled event times the value of the potential outcome and subtracting associated costs. Abbreviated as E.V, the term is a long-run concept. Zero Sum Zero-sum is as opposed to non-zero sum, indicates that one loses and the other one gains. The non-zero term indicates that all the players lose or gain. What is this sections opinion about superstar decision makers? In order to cope with temporariness, managers have always been concerned with change. What is paramount is the length of time one takes to implement change. Superstar decision makers are termed as â€Å"heroic decision makers†. These employees made good decisions under conditions of uncertainty, and continued to do this repeatedly. They are admired, but caution should be taken in the future since just like a heroic penny that turns up heads, four times in a row, chances are, they can still make a wrong decision. As a result, most managers will tend to deal with individuals who are level headed and who take their time before making any rash decisions that could affect the organization negatively. Why is Tosca unable to facilitate the outcome where she saves both her virtue and her lover? From the pay off matrix, it is realized that both Scarpia and Tosca are minimaxers and thus they fail to see that they do not have a zero sum game. Moreover, a coalition solution would produce positive payoffs for both. Why do you think human beings are risk averse when it comes to positive outcomes, but â€Å"risk seeking† when it comes to situations of negative outcomes? Would it not make more sense to be risk seeking when it comes to positive outcomes and risk averse with regard to negative outcomes? Human beings are risk averse when it comes to positive outcomes, but â€Å"risk seeking† when it comes to situations of negative outcomes, because when they enter into a position of possible adversaries or collaborators they fail to analyze beforehand whether the situation is a non-zero sum game or a zero sum game. As a result, it is crucial to be risk seeking when it comes to positive outcomes and risk averse with regard to negative outcomes. Chapter 22 Why do companies have gift policies, and why are some of these policies so strict? A conversation exists between Faust and Stanley. It is realized that gifts generally can be used to influence decisions in an organization. Even though an individual in a lower cadre cannot influence decisions in an organization, the individual can belong to a group that will eventually collectively, influence decisions in the organization. How do you respond to Stanley’s question of whether this is really an ethical issue? Behavior is predictable if the individual under review is known. While a person’s behavior may not appear rational to an outsider, more often than not, it is intended to be rational. Moreover, the subject views their behavior as rational. This summarizes the ethics that the employee should not have received the gift. How can you deal with the ethical lapse -as you view it- of another person, other than by â€Å"turning them in†. For example, what alternatives would you consider if you were aware that another employee had accepted an inappropriate gift? Foremost, an alternative that would work best instead of whistle blowing is a review of the Code of Conduct. Instead of turning in the employee, I would consider reviewing the Code of Conduct with him or her and exemplify or emphasize on the illegal action of accepting gifts and the implications that arise from the action of accepting. Doesn’t it make practical sense to overlook common, petty ethical lapses in order to maintain your credibility for dealing with weightier issues? Typically, ethical issues affect organizations considerably irrespective of how petty or serious they seem to be. Usually, issues that are regarded as petty become compounded over time thus affecting the organization drastically. This would be avoided if the issues were reported early. Why would the NCAA care about an athlete receiving a 10-cent cookie? Does this policy not seem a bit petty? The NCAA realizes the considerable effect of ethical issues regardless of their simplicity or complexity. Therefore, the NCAA was unwilling to allow the athlete receives a 10-cent cookie based on the magnitude that it would have on ethics in the organization. Thus, it is crucial not to overlook any petty ethical lapses in the organization. As a result, the NCAA did not overlook the cookie. Chapter 23 What was the problem and benefit of Stanley telling Ted what he thought of the orientation program? One fear of Stanley telling Ted what he thought of the orientation program was that he would offend Ted, but ultimately it helped Ted improve on the delivery. Why does Stanley’s widespread name recognition result in his being chosen as the best candidate for an important New York assignment? Stan is chosen because of his honesty of judgment, since he would have lied to Ted in order to gain the opportunity than say how he honestly felt. Is self-promotion ethical? There is ultimately nothing wrong with self-promotion. Chapter 24 Using payoff matrices for Ted and Ben, how would you explain the outcome of this tale? In terms of using the payoff matrices, Ted will receive a +10 due to the favorable outcome arising out of Ben’s acceptance of the SUREFIRE program. Nevertheless, Ben will also receive a moderately favorable payoff of +5 respective of the fact that he rejects the program but accepting it would work in his favor. At this point, there would be no strike. However, if a strike occurred, then Ted would gain slightly and thus gain a moderate outcome of -5. However, Ben will lose considerably since he is in charge of management at the plant and thus gain a -10. What are the upside and the downside of Ted’s tactics? Ted’s upside in his move is that he is giving himself more power to control the workers in the organization, while the downside is that he is creating a disconnect, thus reducing their morale of the employees. How can you explain the text’s claim that Ben and Ted do not seem to be trying to reach the best managerial decision, but rather â€Å". . . a personal decision dressed up as a managerial one†? This is a personal decision since both Ted and Ben are trying to usurp power, creating disarray, and thereby reducing their output. Chapter 25 What functions does the MERIT system serve from a cultural/interpretive viewpoint? The rating system gives each employee a position in terms of his performance and thus curbs bias in the organization. It also gives the true worth of an employee to the organization. Additionally, the ranking system allows employees to gauge their performance based on their rankings in the organization. What functions does the MERIT system serve from a technical/rational viewpoint? The MERIT system provides a platform that will allow the organization to determine their overall performance based on the performance of the employees. This is rational from the organization’s point of view since the system allows organization to monitor the individual performances of each employee and thus ascertain those that add or decrease value. Why is the issue of rating versus ranking performance primarily a technical/rational issue? Rating and ranking performance is a rational issue since it forces employees to apply self-interest in the sense, that an employee is only considered about his or her individual performance and does not become concerned with the performance of other employees. This further creates tension and animosity between employees. There is also no aspect in ranking value other attributes. These are the technical/rational issues that affect both the rating and ranking approach in the MERIT system. What is the upside and downside of both the rating and rankings approach? The upside of the rating approach is that it allows employees to rate their performance and thus note the areas they need to change in order to perform more effectively. Additionally, the upside of the ranking approach is because employees are able to receive incentives to work harder and add value to the organization based on their rankings on their efforts. However, ranking and rating possess a downside that is based on discord and tension. This is because rating instills discord between employees and their seniors, while ranking creates tensions between employees due to competitive rivalry.

Special Economic Zones in China

Special Economic Zones in China Since 1979, China’s Special Economic Zones (SEZ) have been beckoning foreign investors to do business in China. Created after Deng Xiaoping’s economic reforms were implemented in China in 1979,   Special Economic Zones are areas where market-driven capitalist policies are implemented to entice foreign businesses to invest in China. The Importance of Special Economic Zones At the time of its conception, Special Economic Zones were considered so special because Chinas trade was generally controlled by the nations centralized government. Therefore, the opportunity for foreign investors to do business in China with relatively no government intervention and with the freedom to implement market-driven economics was an exciting new venture. Policies regarding Special Economic Zones were meant to incentivize foreign investors by providing low-cost labor, specifically planning Special Economic Zones with ports and airports so that goods and materials could be easily exported, reducing corporate income tax, and even offering tax exemption.   China is now a huge player in the global economy and has made large strides in economic development in a concentrated period of time. Special Economic Zones were instrumental in making Chinas economy the way it is today. Successful foreign investments galvanized capital formation and spurred urban development what with the proliferation of office buildings, banks, and other infrastructures. What Are the Special Economic Zones? The first 4 Special Economic Zones (SEZ) were established in 1979. Shenzhen, Shantou, and Zhuhai are located in Guangdong province, and Xiamen is located in Fujian province.   Shenzhen  became the model for China’s Special Economic Zones when it was transformed from 126-square-miles of villages known for sales of knockoffs to a bustling business metropolis. Located a short bus ride from  Hong Kong  in southern China, Shenzhen is now one of China’s richest cities.   The success of Shenzhen and the other Special Economic Zones encouraged the Chinese government to add 14 cities plus  Hainan Island  to the list of Special Economic Zones in 1986. The 14 cities include Beihai, Dalian, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Lianyungang, Nantong, Ningbo, Qinhuangdao, Qingdao, Shanghai, Tianjin, Wenzhou, Yantai, and Zhanjiang.   New Special Economic Zones have been continually added to encompass a number of border cities, provincial capital cities, and autonomous regions.

How To Communicate Effectively With Your Blog Readers

How To Communicate Effectively With Your Blog Readers How about writing your blog posts in a language the majority of your readers dont speak or understand? Yet thats what we bloggers do, sometimes. We write in a way that doesnt communicate well with our readers. Its understandable, really. A  huge communication barrier writers face is that they cant tap into the power of non-verbal communication. We use tone of voice, gestures, and facial expressions to evaluate the meaning behind the words. We can tell if someone is being sarcastic, or is disinterested. But when the only communication tool you have is the written word, you have to learn to pull extra weight. Writers must learn to communicate clearly with their blog readers. Thats especially true if they want to keep their blog readers, and want those readers to do something. How To Communicate Effectively With Your #Blog Readers via @JulieNeidlinger1. Don't Assume People Understand Acronyms And Initialisms One of the more helpful habits I picked up as a newspaper reporter was the practice of always writing out the words that make up an acronym before referring to it only with the acronym in the rest of the article. You would include the acronym after the words, in parentheses, alerting the reader that from here on out, you'll just be using the acronym. Example: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Content marketing copy can be full of acronyms. SEO, CTA- heck, I often stumble on a few that I don't know the meaning of. The field is changing so quickly, and buzzwords and phrases develop at a similar rate. I find if I'm not constantly reading blog posts on the topic, I am soon out of the loop. We've had readers who have asked, in the comments, what an acronym meant. They shouldn't have to do that. Even if you're certain your readers know what the acronym is, try to write it out the first mention so they don't have to feel stupid for not knowing. Don't make your readers guess what your acronyms mean. #blogging2. Don't Make Your Reader Feel Stupid I mention the importance of defining acronyms because they are a part of the way we make our readers feel stupid. This is not a good thing. We can make blog readers feel stupid by assuming they have the backstory, the background knowledge- it's being in a group and realizing you're the only one who doesn't get the inside joke. Don't assume your #blog readers know your backstory. It can alienate them from reading your content. You can help your blog reader avoid feeling stupid without having to re-explain yourself every time you blog by providing links to past posts that will help provide better background. We often include "recommended reading" or "for further reading" boxes in posts at appropriate places in the content. This way,  the reader has a kind of organized guided tour of the content that will bring them up to speed. Stop Over-Communicating For some of us, the fear of not communicating causes us to over-communicate. Why tell a story in five sentences when you can tell it in five paragraphs? I know this problem well, believe me. When trying to make a point, I want to be sure I hammer it home, and instead of using one concise example, I figure about ten will do. Sometimes explaining isn't necessary and weighs down the message. Over-explaining isn't necessary nearly every time. This can be true in both your blog copy as well as your responses on social media or in blog comments. Never complain. Never explain. - Katharine Hepburn The Brains On Fire blog shared a few tips to avoid over-communicating and, true to the point, they did not mince words: Wait. Don't respond immediately if you're involved in a conversation. Sleep on it. Time provides a new perspective. Figure out your one thing. If you were only allowed to say one thing, what would it be? Embrace silence. Silence is only uncomfortable for those who have not taken the time to understand it. Breathe. Don't fill the air with talking and noise. Don't fill the screen with meaningless words. Allow you and your reader to breathe. 4. Use Imagery That Has A  Purpose Content marketers know the drill: Have a hero image with all content because images will get noticed and shared more. Unfortunately, that can lead to sloppy image choices just to have an image. Ask yourself if the image or images you are going to use serve a purpose: Does the image contradict the message of the content in any way? Does the image help illustrate the message of the content? Am I using too many images in my copy? Images that contradict what the post is about are like clickbait headlines. They lie. They annoy readers. Your images should support your copy without distracting and making it difficult to read. Images should support your content  without distracting. #blogging5. Emotion Is For The Reader To Feel Because you do not have the ability to show your reader the emotion you are feeling through your facial expressions or tone of voice, you have a bit more work to do to get them to feel the emotion you want from them. Think of a movie or show that makes you tear up. The music, the dialogue, the way the characters are behaving- these all help cue up sad feelings. When I write this post, I can tell you up and down that there's a soundtrack in a minor key playing, but it won't help. So I have to use words that trigger particular feelings. In the March 25, 2015, edition of the Wall Street Journal, an article highlighted how the words used on restaurant menus were aimed at attracting male or female diners. "The word 'hearty' is not a good thing for a woman," she says, "but it's a great thing for a man." Meanwhile, a dish described as "delicate" is likely to be a turnoff to a man craving meat. If a menu describes a meat entree by naming specific animal parts, it is apt to sound gory and unappetizing to many women, Dr. Capaldi Phillips says. Like a space-starved tweet on Twitter, the restaurant menus have to find the words that stir the emotion in the diner. They can't waste space and time telling the diner how they will feel if they eat it. You can tell your blog reader she should feel really good and excited about  your blog post, but telling people how to feel is the best way to get them to feel... nothing. Even if you feel excited, your copy won't necessarily translate that well without work. The reader feels the emotion, not you. Don't tell her how to feel. #bloggingThe reader feels the emotion, not you. Don't tell her how to feel. 6.  Approach  Your Thesis Honestly In most cases, your blog posts begin with a thesis or problem, and then the rest sets about solving or supporting that thesis. Lack of research and logical fallacies can become a problem in some posts that  are contentiously asserting a strong opinion or plan of action. Logical fallacies crop up everywhere online, particularly in heated discussions among random people. When you have a lot riding on proving your point, it's easy to take any shot you can, even if it's a low shot. Frankly, I slip into logical fallacies all the time. Periodically reading about them and practicing the identification of them is helpful to me in my own writing as well as spotting them elsewhere. There are so many of these logical fallacies, and they are so common online and on TV (just watch any episode of The Daily Show) that we are used to hearing them to the point that they become a way we think. They often sound clever and we struggle to contradict or disprove them. When you set out to state a theory and prove a point, be honest about it. If you cannot prove your theory with great research or reasoning, it doesn't mean you can't still write. You simply must write in a way that doesn't try to insinuate and insist that your theory is solid. Avoid logical fallacies to build credible content. #bloggingThe more concrete data you have to back up your thesis  (and the ability to interpret that data accurately), the better. If you're not a data junkie, though, you can still write. The difference will be in the ability to say "green is the best color" or "green is the color I prefer". 7. Clarity Is For More Than Just Diamonds Clarity is the god of writing. Clearly stating your goal. Clearly stating your thesis. Clearly telling your reader what to do. Clearly proving a point. Clearly summing up research and outside links for the reader who decides to trust and not verify. Do you know what the best indicator is for a blog post that won't get to the point? It's a blog post where you don't actually know the point. One of the nice things about using as a team is that there is the ability to discuss and comment on the idea of the post before it actually goes into draft. That way, I know before I write where I am headed. Sometimes it veers. Sometimes I can make that work. But I always have an end goal in mind to work toward. "I'm gonna write about writing" is not a useful thought to have in mind when headed into a 2,000 word blog post. Clarity is achieved through great editing, great language- all of the usual suspects- but it's also heavily reliant on a close-ended idea. You know where you want to go. You write in that direction. You get there. 8. Think Of Reader's Digest Reader's Digest has been popular for more than  80 years. While it might not make prestigious lists, this little magazine has made its way into homes for almost a century and has brought with it stories and articles of all types. I grew up in a house that received Reader's Digest, and I would read it cover to cover, from when I was young until I was an adult. How did this magazine communicate so well across such a broad range of readers? According to Internet Evangelism Today, you can break down their success as follows: It is written at the level of a 13-year-old, but does not talk down to adults. It has a high percentage of stories that are about people. These stories are told dramatically, and use plenty of quoted speech. It addresses practical problems (felt needs), helping improve people's lives. There is humor mixed in with serious articles. How can you use this in your own blog content? Can you add people into your posts through testimonials or anecdotes? Are you addressing practical problems? Do you have a little humor mixed in? People like people. People like solutions to problems. People like to laugh. Simple as that. How Will You Communicate Better With Your Blog Readers? This is by no means the end-all list of how to communicate with readers in your writing, and you might not even put all of them to use in one post. I'm willing to bet many of you have your own tricks and tips. What do you consider to be the most problematic writing technique that keeps readers from latching onto content? And, what do you think is the best way to communicate with your blog readers? As a reader myself, I choke on posts that seem too similar or too salesy. I want to feel that what I am reading is genuine and not contrived for my benefit. I don't want to feel stupid and, consequently, excluded. I want to feel like I'm reading a blog where I belong, where the author is talking to people like me. These tips are just a few ways I try to do that in my own writing.
